REGINA - Federal election day, April 28, is finally here in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

Polls opened across the province at 7:30 a.m. this morning and they remain open in Saskatchewan until 7:30 p.m. when the polls close. The poll closure will be timed to coincide with closing times in most of the rest of the country, although results from the Atlantic will have already come in. As well, polls in British Columbia and Yukon are not set to close for another half-hour, at 8 p.m. Saskatchewan time.

Election Day was highlighted by some fireworks coming, predictably, from the White House. President Donald Trump put out a social media post in which he mused once again about Canada becoming the 51st State.

"Free access with no border! All positives with no negatives. It was meant to be," posted Trump.

The leaders are back home in their various ridings after a final day on the campaign trail Sunday. The indication is the Liberals still have high hopes to break through in urban areas including in Saskatoon.

Liberal Mark Carney stopped in Saskatoon on the final day, speaking to supporters in River Landing. That appearance comes on the heels of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre's rally in Saskatoon last week.

Sask Today will be following the results for candidates in all 14 of Saskatchewan's ridings. The Conservatives pulled off clean sweeps in the last two federal elections but the Liberals have hopes of perhaps picking up Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River and possibly an urban seat in Saskatoon or Regina. It would take a major vote swing, however, for the Liberals to claim seats in either one of those cities.

Another story to follow will be the New Democrats. The NDP face a potentially grim showing in Saskatchewan and across Canada and a key story will be to see whether they can stay ahead of the Liberals for second place in votes across the province.

Keep it here at Sask Today for full election night coverage and full reaction from the candidates.
