Canora RCMP: Motorist forced off highway by dangerous driver

A Dodge Dakota had passed a semi and was unable to change back into the proper lane of travel, causing the caller to drive onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP dealt with an unwanted visitor, impaired driver and an assault.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 35 calls from Nov. 7 to Nov. 14, some of which included:

  • one 911 Act call,
  • one abandoned vehicle,
  • two animal complaints,
  • one assault,
  • one breach of peace,
  • one Child Welfare Act call,
  • two disturbing the peace,
  • one false alarm,
  • one fraud,
  • one harassing communications,
  • one impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
  • one Liquor Act call,
  • one Mental Health Act call,
  • four mischiefs,
  • one person reported missing,
  • four suspicious persons,
  • six traffic offenses,
  • two vehicle collisions,
  • one wellbeing check, and
  • three prisoners.

Driver forced off highway

On Nov. 7, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a dangerous driving call on Highway 9 by Crystal Lake. The caller reported a Dodge Dakota had passed a semi and was unable to change back into the proper lane of travel causing the caller to drive onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision. Police have identified the driver and continue to investigate.

Unwanted visitor

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Nov. 8 to a call where a woman was reported to be intoxicated, screaming, and kicking a door on a residence in Canora. Police attended the scene and arrested the woman for disturbing the peace. The woman was later released from police custody without charge.

Impaired driver

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 9 driving towards Sturgis on Nov. 10. Police located and stopped the suspect vehicle. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver provided breath samples of 220mg% and 190mg%. The vehicle was seized for 60 days and drivers’ licence was suspended.

Rural assault

On Nov. 11, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to the Buchanan area for a disturbance call. Police attended a residence and arrested a man at the scene. The man was charged with assault and released on an undertaking with conditions to attend court and have no contact with the victim.

Lock your doors

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of a door left open on an unoccupied residence in Canora on Nov. 12. Police searched the home and determined no crime was committed. Police secured the home and spoke to the new owner of the residence about the door.
