CANORA- The Canora Supers have reeled off three straight victories versus the Parkland Pirates,the Yorkton Marlins, and the Langenburg Legends in Southeast Senior Baseball League action.
After taking their first loss of the season in the home opener, the Supers bounced back with a 7-3 win over the visiting Parkland Pirates on May 24.
The Pirates put up two runs in the top of the first, but the Supers came back with two of their own to tie it up in the bottom of the first, said Greg Andreychuk, player/coach. Later in the game, the Supers made the best of their opportunities.
“In the bottom of the third the Pirates had three costly errors, which led to three runs,” said Andreychuk. “Then a Travis Mentanko two-run homer put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-3 win.”
The bats were mostly silent as the Supers only had five hits for the game.
“However, Mentanko bailed the Supers out with a home run, a double and five runs batted in to save the day,” said Andreychuk.
Kody Rock, Kholton Shewchuk, and Ty Sleeva each had a single. This was Sleeva’s first start ever for the Supers, and he played well at shortstop, according to Andreychuk.
Shewchuk got the win on the mound, tossing 4 1/3 innings, and allowing just two earned runs and one strikeout on eight hits. Derek Palagian came in for the save while giving up just one hit with one strikeout over the final 2 1/3 innings.
With the win over the Pirates in their back pocket, the Supers travelled to Yorkton on May 26 and defeated the Marlins 2-0.
“This was quite simply the Kody Rock show,” said Andreychuk. “The big right hander got the start on the hill and was in mid-season form in the complete-game victory. .”“The big right hander got the start on the hill and was in mid-season form in the complete-game victory. The Marlins were only able to get one hit on a routine ground ball to second base that hit the infield lip and changed direction. Otherwise it was 21 up and 21 down for the Marlins with 13 strikeouts by Rock as they were overmatched on this evening.”
The hitting has still been slow to start the season as Marlins pitcher Tanner Nesbitt kept the Supers guessing most of the night. However Invermay product (Foam Lake 18U player) Nathaniel Minhinnick made his Supers debut a memorable one.
“Minhinnick contributed three infield singles, a pair of stolen bases and a run scored to be the difference maker for the offence,” said Andreychuk. “Brendon Landstad, Kody Rock, Dylan Toffan, and Evan Rostotski each had one single as runs were hard to come by on this night. Shae Peterson chipped in with a walk and a run scored.”
The Langenburg Legends made their first appearance of the season at Al Sapieha Field on May 31.
“They showed up with the bare minimum of nine players, and brought everything they had,” said Andreychuk. “Fortunately for the Supers, ace pitcher Kody Rock brought his best stuff as well in a two-hit masterpiece as the Supers prevailed 3-1. Rock finished the game giving up only an unearned run on two hits, one walk and racked up 13 strikeouts.”
Langenburg’s Lance Petracek also pitched well, surrendering three runs, two of them earned, on just seven hits.”
The Supers seven hits were produced by just three players. Rock had two singles. Derek Palagian had two singles and a double, while 18U call-up Riley Stewart had two singles in his first start as a Super. The three runs were scored by Kholton Shewchuk, Ian Quewezance and Shae Peterson. Each reached base by either getting hit by a pitch or drawing a walk.
The win boosted the Supers record to four wins and one loss to start the season. The next action for the Supers is June 9 when the Langenburg Legends pay a visit to Canora.
