Local foursomes dominate Canora Town & Country Bonspiel

Probe rink shows that experience counts, takes top spot.

Canora foursomes took first place in all four events at the Canora Town & Country Bonspiel held on January to 29, after the event was cancelled due to the pandemic last year.

With 10 teams entered, the Brandon Draw format was used to determine the order of finish for playoff positioning. Each team played three games and points were awarded as follows: 10 points for each win, five points for a tie and two points for each end where a team scores. The top two teams played in the A Event final, the third and fourth-place teams in the B Event final, and so on for the four events.

Two Canora rinks skipped by Don Probe and Zeno Gulka topped the standings and met in the A Event final. Probe’s team jumped out to a quick 5 to 1 lead after five ends, but Gulka and his squad gamely battled back to a 5 to 5 tie after seven. The Probe side kept their cool, however, and earned the win in the final end.

The B event final pitted Bob Kolodziejski of Canora against Ken Newell of Norquay. Newell and his teammates scored a pair to tie the game at 3 to 3 coming home, and had the potential winning points in the house with one rock left to play. But Kolodziejski made a delicate raise with his last shot for the winning point.

The Kelly McTavish foursome was up against Brenden Hlasychuk and his teammates in an all-Canora contest in the C Event final. Hlasychuk trailed by one coming home and looked to be well set up to steal at least one point until McTavish made a critical raise double takeout to turn the end around, and allow skip Terry Dennis to seal the victory for the McTavish team.

The D event final was between two more Canora foursomes, skipped by Aaron Herriges and Terry Wilson. It was a back-and-forth affair with multiple lead changes, but Herriges and his squad pulled away in the end to take the victory.

The other two rinks which competed in the bonspiel were the Al Palagian foursome from Canora and the Kristen Worobetz team from Preeceville.
