The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 31 calls from January 13 to January 20, some of which included: one traffic accident, two causing a disturbance, 12 provincial traffic offences, seven other provincial statutes, two 911 Act incidents, one impaired operation, two Fire Prevention Act occurrences and four other incidents.
Public intoxication
On January 13, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of an intoxicated male, carrying a bag of alcohol, who slipped and fell in a Canora parking lot. Police attended and arrested the male for being intoxicated in a public place. The male was lodged in cells until sober and his alcohol was disposed of.
Impaired driver?
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on January 13 to a complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling on Highway No. 9 by Preeceville. Police made patrols but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.
Burning vehicle
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP and the Canora Fire Department were dispatched to a vehicle fire in Canora on January 13. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department. The cause of the fire is not suspicious.
Canora collision
On January 14, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended a two vehicle collision in Canora. A Cadillac traveling southbound failed to stop at a yield sign and struck a Dodge Ram traveling east on Eighth Avenue. There were no injuries. The driver of the Cadillac was charged for driving without due care and attention under Section 213(1) of the Traffic Safety Act.
School interruption
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP and the Canora Fire Department were dispatched on January 15 to a report of a fire alarm going off at the Canora Elementary School. The cause of the fire alarm was determined to be from smoke coming from a burned-out electrical heater.
Business alarm
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a two hit alarm at a business in Preeceville on January 15. Police attended and determined the alarm was set off by employees of the business.
COVID beef
On January 19, Canora RCMP Detachment received a complaint in Canora to remove an unwanted person in a business who was causing a disturbance after refusing to follow Provincial COVID regulations. Police attended the scene and were advised the male subject had left.
Snowmobile safety
Canora/Sturgis RCMP would like to remind the public that all rules and regulations apply to snowmobiles on public roads or property including the requirement to register the snowmobile and wear a helmet.
Tips for safe snowmobiling:
- Know the area where you’re travelling and be aware of your surroundings.
- Ensure your equipment is in good working condition.
- Only carry a passenger if your equipment was built for it.
- Check the forecast – always dress appropriate for the weather and don’t forget to wear your helmet and/or protective eye wear. Also be sure to check the ice conditions before taking a snowmobile over frozen bodies of water.
- Be equipped with an emergency kit.
- Always ride with a friend.
- Never drink and ride!
- Never ride on private property without permission of the land owner (Section 25 of The Snowmobile Act, states snowmobiles cannot be operated on private land within a city, town, village, or hamlet, or on posted rural private land, without the consent of the owner or occupier.)
