The Cougars won decisively in the first round, and then battled the host Preeceville team hard before going down to a four-point loss in the semifinal.

CANORA - The Canora Composite School Cougars senior boys’ basketball team travelled to Preeceville for the conference tournament on March 10 and 11, and made it to the semifinals before being eliminated. In addition to the Cougars, other teams competing were Porcupine Plain, Norquay, Hudson Bay, Carrot River, Ministik, and the host team from Preecville.

There were three first-round games on Friday, with top-ranked Porcupine Plain receiving the bye. Canora defeated Ministik decisively by 77-51, while Norquay and Preeceville were also victorious to advance to the semifinal round on Saturday.

Porcupine Plain left no doubt about the quality of their team with a 105-67 win over Norquay. In the second semifinal, the Cougars gave the Preeceville team a stiff battle, but the hosts prevailed by the score of 67-63 in the closest game of the weekend.

In the championship final, Preeceville kept it close through the majority of the game, but Porcupine Plain pulled away late for an 81-68 victory and the conference championship. As a result, Porcupine Plain and Preeceville each qualified for regionals.
