CANORA - Even after dealing with an uncertain weather forecast and potentially dangerous winds early in the day, the Canora Live & Play Street Festival hosted by the Town of Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee was a “huge success” according to Brandi Zavislak, community development officer and committee member.
“Early in the morning, around 7 or 8 a.m., we had huge winds and he had to think fast,” said Zavislak. “We made the call and decided to move vendors and the music acts into the curling rink. A big thank you goes out to all the Town of Canora workers for all the help in getting it done.”
Originally, the expectation was for over 60 vendors, but Zavislak reported that approximately 20 backed out at the last minute due to the less than ideal weather. Attendance was still high, with a wide variety of vendor displays and services to choose from, with everything from crafts to face painting, as well as a psychic medium and, of course, large numbers of different types of food.
“It was nice to see so many people come in,” said Zavislak. “Our events get such a fabulous turnout.”
Zavislak reported that the Rainbow Hall committee was in charge of the concession at the curling rink and provided “an amazing menu” to long lineups of customers throughout the day.
The Good Spirit Petting Zoo was once again a favourite destination for many youngsters, featuring pony rides as well as other animals ranging from Llamas to chickens and goats.
For those who appreciate classic vehicles, the Canora Cruisers Car Club once again put on a show that drew large crowds.
“All the Cruisers members did such a great job. Even in the poor weather, they had almost as many entries as last year,” said Zavislak.
A new event this year was the dunk tank, hosted by the Canora Cobras Senior Hockey Club. Cobras players, staff, and prominent members of the community were good sports, even on a cool day, and got wet for a good cause.
Zavislak reported that Canora’s downtown had a busy and excellent day during the Live & Play Street Festival.
“Money raised goes into community enhancement for Canora,” said Zavislak. “The members of our committee, all volunteers, work hard and work together to support the community.”
She said there were many out-of-town visitors in town for the day, and the positive feedback indicated they had thoroughly enjoyed their time in Canora.
