Local 4H curlers bring home provincial championship

At the 4H curling provincials in Moose Jaw in February, the District 18/19 junior team went undefeated and captured the provincial championship.

On Feb. 6, District 18/19 held regional 4H curling playoffs in Canora with four teams participating. The junior team for District 18/19 consisted of: Westin Lindgren, Norquay Bin Busters (skip); Presley Vogel, Norquay Tail Twisters (third); Paisley Wolkowski, Good Spirit 4H Club (second), and Bristol Lindgren, Norquay Bin Busters (Lead). They won their only game, which was against the Foam Lake 4H Beef Club. Both teams moved on to provincials.

Members of the District 18/9 senior team were: Porter Wolkowski, Good Spirit 4H Club (skip); Kierra Hawreluk, Sheho 4H Beef Club (third); JT Foster, Norquay Bin Busters (second), and Jackson Lindgren, Norquay Bin Busters (lead). The team lost against the Tisdale Beef Club but both teams advanced to provincials.

The 4H senior curling provincials were held in Weyburn from February 18-20, when eight teams from across Saskatchewan participated.

The District 18/19 senior team started strong with a win against District 17, but followed that with a pair of tight losses.

On the junior side, seven teams hit the ice in Weyburn. The District 18/19 team came out of the gate with a win in their first game, and went on to go through the bonspiel undefeated. The final game against District 10 from the South West region was a nail biter which went down to the last rock.

“It was a big win and they were crowned provincial champions!” reported Carmen Wolkowski, 4H mom. “It was a great weekend for all the curlers to be able to get together once again after COVID-19 to meet up with old friends and meet new ones.”
