CANORA - “It’s my dream job.”
After several months in his position as MLA for the Canora Pelly constituency, Sean Wilson said he is thoroughly enjoying his new position.
“It’s very exciting,” he marveled. “I was always a fan of politics; how the house operates, question period, things like that. Being there now is like being in the movie. It’s great being in the action.”
Consttuency assistants Clarissa Mydonick and Keri Gardner have been extremely helpful in serving the constituency, according to Wilson.
“We want people to understand that we’re all about customer service, and our customers are the people of this constituency,” he said, adding, “The best part of this job is that all three of us have never done it before. I compare it to my first paving job in 2011. Even now that’s still our best paving jobs.”
Wilson was initially appointed deputy whip, then full-fledged whip. He’s also been appointed to public accounts and as legislative secretary of crown investments.
“I’m interested in pretty much every file there is.”
Even though there is value in the enthusiasm of being new, Wilson recognizes the importance of listening to those with experience.
“Former Canora-Pelly MLA Ken Krawetz has given me valuable guidance, but hasn’t tried to tell me what to do or not to do.”
On a larger scale, Wilson recognizes the threat of tariffs coming from newly elected U.S. President Trump, especially since ”We’re a value added province,” and appreciates that our Premier Moe is taking a more subtle approach than some other Canadian premiers.
“Premier Moe has a good relationship with a number of American governors behind the scenes, which I believe is more effective.”
And for those Canora-Pelly residents who are worried about these tariff threats, Wilson said, “Our leadership is looking out for our constituency and our province.”
Also noteworthy lately was the announcement that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has decided to step down.
“He has created his own destiny,” said Wilson. “He had a lot of internal pushback, the carbon tax was probably a big factor.
“But now we need to have an election, so our new leader has the people’s mandate.”
The state of the highways in the Canora-Pelly constituency has long been close to Wilsons heart, and it sounds like nothing will change now that he is our MLA, especially when it comes to Highway 5 and Highway 49
”As MLA I will lobby for our highways to be improved, but knowing that there is only so much money in a Highways budget.”
On a lighter note, Wilson said he thoroughly enjoyed Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, along with all the activity it brought to Canora and the surrounding constituency.
“Canora Minor Hockey President Stacy Vangen and the organizing committee did an amazing job. It was so much fun to be asked to be a judge at the Battle of the Blades. These types of things, anything involving community, is near and dear to me.”
Wilson said he has long been impressed with Canora and other communities in Canora-Pelly when it comes to “how well they function when out to achieve a good purpose.”
He encourages communities in Canora-Pelly to continue to work together.
“We can’t worry about boundaries, when one community succeeds others likely will as well.”
In his continuing efforts to interact with as many constituents as possible, Wilson said a new satellite office will soon be opened in Preeceville, with the date to be announced.
