After a long and snowy winter, organizers and baseball players alike are looking forward to the 2022 Canora Minor Ball season. Another reason to get excited is that COVID-19 restrictions have been removed.

CANORA — The calendar says spring is almost here and that can only mean one thing, it’s almost time for the 2022 season of Canora Minor Ball. Brigitte Herriges, Canora Minor Ball secretary, said an added bonus is that the new season will start with no COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are excited for the upcoming 2022 baseball season,” said Herriges. “Our plan for this season is to start it off with a baseball clinic either the last weekend of April or first weekend in May, weather permitting. We are also looking into starting indoor practices around the middle of April for the older age groups, including U15 and U18. The remaining age groups will commence their season either the end of April or beginning of May, pending when the snow is gone. We are also looking into hosting an umpire clinic as well as some baseball clinics with some Canora Supers baseball players.”

Players and their families are reminded that the registration deadline is March 31, 2022, and after that, late fees will apply.

“We accept cash, cheque, or e-transfers,” explained Herriges. “Please go to our new Canora Minor Ball website at canoraminorball.com to learn more about what we have planned, to register for clinics, and/or to register for this upcoming season. We look forward to seeing everyone out at the sports grounds this spring and summer!”

Herriges said in recent years there has been a noticeable increase in interest regarding girls softball in the Canora area.

“We are considering offering options for girls ages 9-18. To help guide us on this decision, please respond to our poll on the Canora Minor Ball Facebook Page before March 31. If you do not have Facebook and want to vote, please email [email protected] and advise whether or not your daughter would be interested in playing girls softball versus baseball. If there is enough interest, we will need more volunteers on our board as well as coaches and managers to make this come to life.”

The Canora Minor Baseball annual general meeting was held on March 2 at the Sylvia Fedoruk Center with 13 persons in attendance, including four executive members.

In addition to Herriges, the executive for 2022 includes: Kelly McTavish, president; Amanda Zbitniff, treasurer; Jill Craig, registrar; Jodie Kowalyshyn, equipment manager; Candace Doogan, kitchen manager, and newcomer Carmen Wolkowski, fundraising coordinator.

Herriges added that Canora Minor Baseball still needs two or three volunteers for its fundraising committee as well as coaches and team managers.
