RCMP Report: Assault report leads to standoff with Canora police

Police were dispatched to an assault complaint in Canora and attempted to arrest a male in the home. The male pulled out a knife, threatened police with it, and locked himself in the house. After approximately an hour, the male exited the residence and was arrested without incident.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to to 54 calls from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28, including a report of the sudden death of a male found in a body of water.

CANORA - The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 54 calls from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28, some of which included: four 911 Act calls, three assaults, one assault on police with a weapon, four Coroners Act calls, two criminal harassments, two disturbing the peace, one failing to comply with conditions, one false alarm, one Firearms Act call, three Mental Health Act calls, four mischiefs, one other provincial call, eight suspicious persons, five thefts, one traffic collision, 12 traffic offenses, and one wellbeing check.

Officer assaulted

On Sept. 26, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to an assault complaint at a residence in Canora. Police attended the scene and attempted to arrest a male in the home. The male pulled out a knife, threatened police with it, and locked himself in the house. Police spoke to the male through a broken window and after approximately an hour he exited the residence and was arrested without incident. The male has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon and assault. The male was remanded into custody for Yorkton Provincial Court.

Body in water

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Sept. 25 to a sudden death complaint involving a male found in a body of water. Police are assisting the Saskatchewan Coroners Service with the investigation.

Looking in windows

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report that an intoxicated male wearing all black was looking in the windows of a residence in Sturgis on Sept. 23. Police made patrols but were unable to locate the male.

High driver

A vehicle was stopped on Sept. 21 by Yorkton Traffic Services on Highway 9 by Amsterdam for failing to yield to oncoming traffic. The driver was found to be under the influence of cannabis and was issued a 72-hour road side drivers’ licence suspension and three-day vehicle impound.

Combine fire

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended a combine fire in the RM of Clayton on Sept. 21. There was a mechanical issue that caused the combine to start on fire. The Sturgis Fire Department attended and put out the fire.

Suspicious male in camo

On Sept. 21, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a male wearing camo with a rifle slung over his back walking by Mary Street in Canora. Police made patrols and were not able to locate the male.
