RCMP Report: Semi hits ditch to avoid train collision in the fog

Police were dispatched to a report of semi in the ditch at the railway tracks south of Canora on Highway 9. Officers learned the driver of the semi drove into the ditch to prevent a collision with a train crossing the highway.

RCMP responded to a semi in the ditch at the railway tracks south of Canora on Highway 9 on Aug. 29. Police learned that the semi driver drove into the ditch to avoid a collision with a train during heavy fog.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 21 calls from Aug. 24 to 30, some of which included: one abandoned vehicle, one disturbing the peace, one failing to comply with conditions, two false alarms, two mischiefs, one other provincial call, one suspicious person, one theft of a bicycle, one traffic collision, eight traffic offenses, one uttering threats, and one wellbeing check.

Semi in the ditch

On Aug. 29, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of semi in the ditch at the railway tracks south of Canora on Highway 9. Police investigated the incident and learned the driver of the semi drove into the ditch to avoid a collision with a train crossing the highway. Visibility was very poor at the time of the incident due to heavy fog. The highway was closed for a short time and traffic was diverted as crews cleaned up the scene and towed the semi and two trailers out of the ditch. There were no injuries.

Alcohol endangers kids

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Aug. 29 to a dispute involving two intoxicated individuals at a residence in Canora. Police attended and located young children in the home. As the parents were in no condition to care for the children, a family member was contacted to watch the children. Child and Family Services was also contacted to follow up with the family.

Menacing tire iron

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report that a male had walked up to a residence in Canora with a tire iron in his hands on Aug. 29. The male did not threaten anyone or damage property. As the report was made two days after the incident, police were unable to locate and question the suspicious male.

Attempted bike theft

On Aug. 24, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report that a male had attempted to steal a bike from a yard in Canora. Police were able to locate the suspect and he was detained for investigation.
