KAMSACK — In a large gathering for pancakes marked by the unmistakable hum of snowmobile engines, the annual Sno-Derby in Madge Lake unfolded with enthusiastic participation from the local community. Organized by Tyson Leis, the event has become a staple in the region.
As participants converged on the venue on Jan. 27, the day's agenda included a variety of attractions, from a pancake breakfast to a raffle draw for a smoker and a 50/50 draw, with the main highlight being a prime rib supper from Iron Grill. Despite concerns about the weather, the event enjoyed a stroke of luck with a favourable forecast, allowing the derby to proceed smoothly.
Addressing the partnership with Iron Grill, Leis clarified that while they collaborated on certain aspects, the pancake breakfast was organized independently by the Kamsack Sno-Drifters, and the supper was organized by the Iron Grill. The event also featured a range of prizes generously provided by sponsors, adding an extra layer of excitement for attendees.
When asked about potential challenges posed by the weather, Leis expressed relief, stating, “The two-week forecast looked really good, so we got lucky.”
This marks the third year since the event's return after disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Leis expressed gratitude for the community's ongoing support and highlighted the success of the event in previous years.
“We're lucky. You know, not many places with snow, but we had a great turnout. Over 120 riders so far. It's warm out, sunny, and we're just enjoying the day,” shared Leis.
