PREECEVILLE - Three students from the Timberline Band — Olivia Ivanochko and Maicey Scheller from Preeceville, and Joseph Chorneyko from Norquay — had the opportunity to enhance their music repertoire when they were nominated by their band teacher, Nathan Seghers, to attend the University of Regina Honour Band.

Seghers accompanied the trio to Regina and supported them throughout the entire weekend. From Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, the University of Regina hosted its 19th annual Honour Band, which brought together some of the most talented young musicians from the southern half of the province. Out of more than 210 applicants, only 101 students were selected based on teacher nominations, including these three outstanding musicians from the local band program.

Olivia, Maicey, and Joseph were among those chosen for this prestigious ensemble. “Their dedication to music goes beyond the classroom, as they consistently put in extra time to refine their skills. As their teacher, I am continually impressed by their musicianship, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence,” said Seghers.

The students rehearsed for nearly 10 hours throughout the intensive weekend, culminating in a remarkable final concert.

“Witnessing their growth in such a short time was truly inspiring. In a world filled with uncertainty, it was uplifting to see 100 young musicians dedicate their weekend to the pursuit of artistic excellence. Their hard work and passion for music are a testament to the power of perseverance, and I could not be more proud of their achievements,” stated Seghers.

“I have been playing the alto saxophone in the Good Spirit School Division program for six years, and I was very excited to have this opportunity to experience and be part of a big band. This was my fourth year attending the Honour Band,” said Ivanochko. “It was a thrilling experience, and I had a great learning opportunity that helped me evolve as a musician. The music world is small, with many friendships built through our shared passion for music.”

This was Maicey Scheller’s first year at the Honour Band, and she was eager to share her passion for music with others who share the same enthusiasm. “It was great to challenge myself with different types of university-level music,” Scheller stated. She has played the flute for nine years, piano for 10 years, and guitar for the last four years.

Joseph Chorneyko from Norquay was both excited and nervous about attending. He rated his overall experience highly. This was his first time at the Honour Band, and he felt honoured and privileged to participate. “I am still in awe from the weekend,” said Chorneyko. “We had a very hectic schedule on Saturday with six full rehearsals, including separate sections based on our instruments. The concert on Sunday was so much fun, and it was a huge honour to perform with others from across the province in one large band environment,” he added.

He has played the trumpet for three years and feels honoured to play his aunt’s trumpet. Additionally, he is an accomplished pianist and comes from a musical family.
