PREECEVILLE — The Preeceville and Sturgis Composite Schools acknowledged Education Week, which was held from Oct. 16 to 20. The theme this year was Bright Minds, Bright Futures.
The theme highlighted the role of education in supporting students in reaching and building for their future and shared future of our province. stated the Good Spirit School Division website.
To kick off the week, each school held a Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Bus drivers were recognized and presented with special gifts of appreciation.
Bus drivers are often the first and last person students come in contact with on school days.
"GSSD employs 130 bus drivers including spare drivers and transports over 2,800 students travelling more than 20,000 km each day. Thank you for your service and dedication to transporting students safely to and from school each day," stated the website.
The Preeceville School held a special in-school event each day in recolonization of Education Week. On Oct. 17, the Grades 11 to 12 students travelled to Yorkton for a career day expo, and a bus evaluation was held for students in kindergarten as they were not at school the day prior.
The following day, staff, students and families enjoyed a free pancake breakfast followed by a fun flashlight buddy reading in the gym afternoon. The morning featured the older students and parents reading to the younger students in the darkness of the gyn with only a flashlight for illumination.
On Friday, the school featured a School Community Council healthy snack break for the entire school body. During the week, the school encouraged its students to bring a non-perishable food item for the Filling the Gap food bank program.
Sturgis Composite activities
The Sturgis School kicked off Education Week on Oct. 16 by presenting the three school bus drivers with a special bus driver appreciation gift.
Events included an open house with a barbecue, used book sale, games for everyone at the elementary end of the school, and concluded with a senior boys volleyball game against Canora. The open house encouraged parents to come in and talk to their students, teachers and see their students work.
Shawn Beatty, the new superintendent, was welcomed and enjoyed playing games with students, grabbing a burger and enjoying the volleyball game.
