A man who went on a crime spree throughout rural Saskatchewan last year, including two local communities, received his sentence on Thursday, June 17.
Cody William Kemick embarked on a series of break-and-enter thefts at small businesses across nine communities between February and November of 2020, including the villages of Conquest, Milden, Lucky Lake and Dinsmore. He pled guilty to the offences, which amounted to $83,368 in losses; a number of which Kemick was ordered to make restitution.
Judge Sanjeev Anand handed down a sentence of four years to Kemick in a Saskatoon court room, noting that the crimes "attacked the very heart of rural Saskatchewan".
Kemick pled guilty to a total of 12 offences: five counts of breaking and entering in order to steal at businesses in Dinsmore, Lucky Lake, Rosetown, Watrous and Val Marie; three counts of theft over $5,000 from a farmyard in the RM of Dundurn and businesses in Humboldt and Kerrorbert; two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 from Unity and Aberdeen businesses; and two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 from businesses in Conquest and Milden.
The courtroom heard that Kemick would steal multiple items from businesses, including tools, computers, and tires to more simplistic items such as lottery tickets, cigarettes, and cash. Co-accused Chantel Veronica Dubois is also charged with the same property offences.
Kemick has a total of eight prior convictions on his criminal record that are property-related, as well as a conviction for child luring. Of the computer equipment that was returned to businesses, one owner found child pornography. After RCMP analyzed other computers and devices, a number of pornographic materials involving underage girls were discovered. Kemick has pled guilty to possessing child pornography and received a 14-month jail term in addition to the term received for the offences related to property.
