REGINA — Regina police have charged one man with assaulting an officer after an altercation on Saturday that led to the deployment of an officer’s taser.

On Oct. 16, police responded to a call regarding an unwanted guest at an address on the 2100 block of Rose Street.

Upon arrival, police determined the adult male in question had warrants out for his arrest, and attempted to do so.

“He became aggressive and would not listen to police commands,” said a release from the Regina police.

An officer discharged a taser in the physical altercation, and successfully took the male into custody. He was assessed by EMS before being transported to detention at the Regina Police Service.

Douglas Russell, 54, of Regina has been charged with assaulting a police officer in relation to the incident.

Russel made his first appearance in provincial court this morning.

Per policy, the RPS is required to report the discharge of a use of force weapon, including a taser, to the Saskatchewan Police Commission. An internal Use of Force committee will also review the incident.
