Saskatoon - Fire crews help in vehicle accident

One of the occupants needed extrication

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department was at the right place and at the right time as an extrication was needed in a two-vehicle accident at 19th Street and 1st Avenue.

At 9:42 a.m. Monday, SFD fire crews were on their way back to their station after responding to another incident when they came upon the accident.

An occupant of one of the vehicles involved required extrication and the SFD crew radioed dispatch to send a rescue unit and the battalion chief for support at the accident scene.

SFD dispatchers also notified the Saskatoon Police Service and the ambulance service.

Firefighters used a hydraulic cutting tool to open the driver's door in order to help the occupant get out of the vehicle.

The ladder truck from the closest fire station was required to provide extra bags of absorbent material \ to clean up diesel that had leaked from a one-ton cube van.

An SFD maintenance vehicle also responded to transport and properly dispose of the material used to soak up the leaked fluids on the ground.
