Satisfying agreements or not?

Column by Sonja Herter

Is there ever anything that can be done where there is total agreement to satisfy everyone? Is it just human nature to have an opposite or very different view or simply disagree for the sake of disagreeing?

Recently world leaders met in Paris for two weeks to discuss climate change with the aim of finding an agreement to lower the levels of emissions which are causing varied effects in the world. There were representatives from 190 countries, yet when the findings were announced of this major project, there were negative comments on their recommendations. Is there ever a time when all can be satisfied?

Not long ago we had a federal election and maybe, the party voted in did not get your personal support, but a chance should be given for the best interests of the country. There is no need to react negatively from the very start. Not everyone can be a winner just like in sports, but a loser has to show good sportsmanship and accept defeat with grace.

Then there is the case of the refugees coming to Canada which has been causing some negative reactions while others opened their hearts and homes to welcome them. A political candidate in the neighbouring country is causing quite a stir with his comments regarding them. These are comments coming from natives, so who should we be more concerned about – refugees or our own home-grown negativism?

This last week, the passing of Bill 6 in Alberta has resulted in death threats against the premier of the province. Is this truly the Canadian way of doing things when you do not like what is there?  Perhaps if we all thought the same, life would not be too interesting, but we also should be open-minded to others and the ideas that are put forward. Do you think personally you can do better?
