Your eyes and ears for Outlook and the surrounding Lake Diefenbaker region came away from the annual Better Â鶹´«Ã½s Competition with some solid showings.
The writing staff of The Outlook, Derek Ruttle and Shelley Luedtke, were up for five awards in this year's competition, which puts a spotlight on the best and brightest in weekly Saskatchewan news from all over the province.
First off, Luedtke took 1st Place in the category of Best Saskatchewan Arts or Cultural Series for her article, 'Saskatchewan's first Black settlement holds stories to learn from'! Comments from some of the judges noted how Shelley wrote "very engaging articles" that focused on the history of the Shiloh settlement. "Wonderfully written and engaging; provides good historical context as well as modern day relevance."
As well, Luedtke came in 2nd Place for Columnist of the Year for her weekly feature, 'My Outlook'. She also ranked 2nd for Best Health/Healthcare Coverage Series of Stories for her article, 'Coping with COVID-19 around the world'. Judges said: "I like the originality of Shelley's series. By travelling outside of her community she offers interesting insights from around the world from local faces. It's a global view of the global pandemic as seen through former Lake Diefenbaker residents."
Finally, Derek Ruttle's article, 'Marina Plans for Lake Resort Shaping Up' came in 3rd Place in the category of Best Business Writing. Judges said: "Clearly outlines the plans and the stakeholders, along with the potential opportunities for local businesses and residents."
As well, Ruttle came in 3rd Place for his article on Outlook mayor Maureen Weiterman after her election win last November, 'Humble mayor-elect Weiterman makes Outlook history'.
The Outlook staff looks forward to once again joining the best of the best in the province for next year's awards! Keep reading!
