We did it!
Those are the words written on the pool fundraising thermometer announcing that the initial fundraising goal had been met. More than $1.5 million raised to give Outlook a facility that has generated so much excitement and unbounded pride. Pride in what can happen when people come together behind a common goal.
Of course, not everyone was, or is, in favor of the project, but that is to be expected when people have different priorities. But if different groups and committees are allowed to pursue varied interests, it results in a community that is vibrant and enriched.
The Chinese proverb, "Those that say it can't be done should get out of the way of those doing it" may have been referenced many times during this project because 'those doing it' were the small but mighty group of volunteers known collectively as the pool fundraising committee. To say they worked tirelessly is an understatement. To say they toiled thanklessly was far too often a reality.
They canvassed every home in town and every farm in the area. They set up garage sales and raffles. They flipped burgers, ran concessions, held suppers and organized auctions. They set up information booths, answered questions and, regrettably, had to dodge the slings and arrows of those opposed to the location, the design or the project itself.
Still, they soldiered on.
Others in the community caught the vision and assisted where they could, or they supported every event that was held. They held fundraisers of their own; they baked, sewed, built and offered time and talent knowing every dollar brought the total one step closer. Some gave sacrificially. Businesses donated and held unique fundraisers. Schoolchildren worked hard to raise money. Community groups stepped in to support the effort. And of course, there was the gift from Cor Van Raay that caused a big jump in the thermometer. Thanks to the tremendous efforts by so many, it became reality on July 1 when the doors were opened and people invited in to see all that had been done.
To all those who worked on the pool and grounds, to the construction foreman, and to the fundraising committee, there are inadequate words to express our gratitude and thanks. The new swimming pool is fantastic and something we can be very proud of in our town. You all went above and beyond and deserve so much than we are able to offer in terms of recognition.
Perhaps the delighted squeals of children, the smiles on all of our faces, and the countless hours of enjoyment that are sure to come is something which will encourage you all. Well done, and…thank you.
Signed,
Shelley, Delwyn & Derek
