PREECEVILLE — The Preeceville Panthers football team had a tough season faced with many challenges that come with a roster filled with young, inexperienced players.
Preeceville travelled to St. Brieux on Oct. 6 and had high expectations but unfortunately they made some costly errors that would end their season with a loss of 44-12.
“It was the first time for many that they had the opportunity to experience playing under the lights,” said Jeremy Mattison, coach. “The guys held their own in the first half but the second half St. Brieux get the advantage and we never recovered. It was very disappointing for the players and coaches that our season was cut short.
“It was just one of those years where we faced rebuilding and overcoming challenges associated with a young and inexperienced team. We do not have a peewee or junior program anymore and I believe if there was, then out players would have been in better shape. Unfortunately, there are not even coaches wanting to set up and help the program. I want to encourage anyone who might be interested to contact the school.”
Mattison went on to add, “In general, the team players worked harder, practiced harder and overcame personal issues to become better individuals in school and in the world. It is not all about the winning aspect, while it is nice to win, but it’s even more important for players to learn lessons that they encounter every day, from being accountable, team building and overcoming mental and physical issues. The guys were a great bunch of players that stepped up and had some fun while learning those valuable lessons.”
The future looks very bright for the team with many Grade 9 and 10 students stepping up with showing a lot of great potential at the recent Carrot River mini football tournament.
The team will be losing seven Grade 12 students, and wish them the very best in the future.
