Donald Ernest Blommaert, son of Ernest William Alexander (Bill) Blommaert (Dd.) and Emelina Gezina Elizabeth Geerts (Dd). was born in Yorkton on April 19, 1936. His father, Bill was born in Horebeke, Belgium and his mother, Emelina in Assen, Holland. They were married in Winnipeg on October 20, 1932. Don was the middle child of three: Grace Henriette, born November 6, 1933 and Elizabeth Ann, born August 24, 1947. The family lived in Yorkton and the children attended Victoria Public School and the Yorkton Collegiate Institute. Following graduation from the collegiate Don attended Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto for a year and then worked at a car dealership. He returned to Yorkton and began working at the H&B office building where he remained for several years. During those years he sang with a barbershop quartet - as he had a good tenor voice. Later in life, Don married his high school sweetheart Angie Kramer of Yorkton and they lived in California. He loved being in the midst of the entertainment industry. He returned to Yorkton to care for his aging parents and he remained here until last year when his illness caused him to enter a care facility. Don's lifelong passion was in the movie and music field. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the popular music of the 40's, 50's and 60's. He acquired a large collection and could recite the details of the production of most of them. Also he loved his cars - his first one was a bright red MGA roadster and he took excellent care of his cars. He is survived by his two sisters, Elizabeth (Jim) Radford of Edmonton and Grace Hallett of Toronto; his two nephews, Bill Radford of Vancouver and Tony (Jocelyne) Hallett of Yorkton; and by his three nieces, Cheryl (Adam) Baxter of Edmonton, Nicole Hallett of Toronto and Carla Hallett (Robert Minden) of Vancouver. There are several cousins as well. Don will be remembered for his easy going personality and his love of music. A private family funeral service was held on Saturday February 23, 2013 from Kopan's Funeral Service with Reverend Steve Rosluk of the First Baptist Church in Yorkton officiating. Don's sister, Grace Hallett and his nephew, Tony Hallett shared memories of Don with the congregation. The music selections in remembrance of Don were "Amazing Grace", "My Way" by Frank Sinatra, and "Just As I Am" by the Martins. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Clive McNichol, Dale McNichol, Tony Hallett and Jason Kopan serving as the Pallbearers. Those so wishing to make a charitable memorial contribution in memory of Donald Blommaert may do so with a gift to the Yorkton Public Library #93 Broadway Street West Yorkton, Saskatchewan S3N 0L9.
