Mary Anne Tomashewski of the Weber House, Yorkton and District Nursing Home passed away on February 24, 2013, at the age of 101 years. Mary was born on January 1, 1912, to Casimir and Anna (Petryshyn) Dziuba in the Mikado District. As a young girl, she attended the Verdant Valley School. On February 11, 1934, Mary was united in marriage to Mike Tomashewski in the St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Mikado. Together they were blessed with seven children. Mike and Mary farmed in the Fort Pelly area until 1950. They moved to north west of Norquay, where they continued to farm until 1967, when they moved to Canora. Although, Mike and Mary retired from farming, they continued to be busy as ever. They always planted a large garden with various varieties of potatoes being a necessity. They frequently drove to Norquay to help their sons John and Dennis on their farms. Each trip saw a car packed with perogies, cabbage rolls and other garden produce. Mary loved gardening, baking bread, making perogies, sewing and knitting. Some of her knitting even reached a hospital in Nigeria. Some of these activities needed to be curtailed due to advancing years, failing eyesight and poor mobility; she nevertheless continued knitting slippers and baking bread until she moved to the nursing home in Yorkton. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Canora and was known for her perogie making for the church's various fund-raising events. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Casimir and Anna; her husband, Mike; her daughter Rosemarie Skibinsky; her two brothers Anton and Alex; her four sisters: Jennie Koroluk, Stella Zielinski, Anastasia Wasylyk and twin sister Anne Bialobzyski. She is lovingly remembered by her three sons: John and Dennis of Norquay and Victor of Moose Jaw; her three daughters: Olga (Albert) Meddins of Young, SK, Maryanne Tomashewski of Mississauga, ON and Elizabeth (Emil) of Foam Lake, SK; her sister Lena Taylor of Toronto, ON; her ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. The Vigil of Prayer was held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at 7:00 P.M., with Ken Rolheiser, Prayer Presider. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at 10:30 A.M., both held from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Canora, with Rev. Fr. Brian Meredith as celebrant. Rite of Committal followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church as tokens of remembrance in memory of Mary. Those unable to attend may sign the on-line guest book at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora (563-5671).
