YORKTON – Whitesand Regional Park is set to host its second annual Frozen Fish Tournament Feb. 22.
According to Wade Lindgren, Vice-president of the board for Whitesand Regional Park, the fundraiser is aimed at supporting park upgrades.
"It's a really good fundraiser for us. Funds go towards the park upgrades. Right now we're working on the golf course and putting in a new dock on the river," said Lindgren in an interview with Â鶹´«Ã½
Reflecting on last year’s event, Lindgren acknowledged some initial challenges but expressed optimism for this year.
"This is our second one. The first one was great. We had a few hiccups but I think we've figured them out and we're going to go with the next one," he said.
The inaugural tournament saw 108 fishermen competing, with 68 fish registered.
Among the standout catches last year were a 36.5-inch pike, a 13-inch perch and a walleye in the six-pound range.
"They only bring to us what they want to get measured. They catch and if it's smaller they throw back," said Lindgren.
This year’s tournament, scheduled for Feb. 22 at Whitesand Regional Park, will feature a catch-and-release format. Same-day registration starts at 10 a.m., with the derby running from noon to 3 p.m.
Competitors may fish from two holes, with the first hole costing $30 and the second $20. Shacks, tents and electronics are allowed and participants are required to bring a pail with water to keep the fish alive.
In addition to the fishing, hamburgers, hot dogs, pop, coffee and water will be available for sale. The event will also feature a raffle prize and a 50/50 draw.
