YORKTON – February has been designated as African Canadian/Black History Month in Sask.
To mark the occasion, the Yorkton Film Festival has teamed up with the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum and the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame to present Open Cinema’s inaugural Black History Month screening.
Scheduled for Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Yorkton Public Library is a screening of "Golden Opportunities," directed by Dan Plaster.
This film features the Indian Head Rockets, a Sask baseball team with Black players from the United States who played across the Canadian Prairies in the 1940s and 1950s.
“The history of sports in Saskatchewan has many different and fascinating aspects, and this is certainly one of them, and worth preserving and making better known,” said Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame chair Dick DeRyk.
“We are pleased to present the film and have the presenters to discuss and bring awareness to Black History Month in our province. And to showcase the proud baseball history that continues in Saskatchewan,” said YFF Executive Director Randy Goulden.
Attendees will receive a screening sticker as part of this year’s Open Cinema Passport program. Collecting four out of five screening stickers makes Passport holders eligible to win two tickets to the 2025 Lobsterfest event at the Yorkton Film Festival.
Open Cinema is open to the public and admission is free.
