More Sask. residents will be clear to book their third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine beginning next Monday.

REGINA — The booster vaccine program in Saskatchewan is expanding next week, branching out to include more individuals considering further immunization against COVID-19.

Beginning on Oct. 25, several groups will become eligible to book their third shot of the vaccine, provided it has been at least six months since the second dose.

Individuals aged 65 or older, as well as those aged 50 years and older living in the far north or in First Nation communities will become eligible.

Additionally, health care workers and individuals born in 2009 or earlier with underlying health conditions that would make them clinically vulnerable will also be eligible for a third shot.

The criteria for underlying health conditions has also expanded, now including:

  • people with severe respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
  • people with rare disease that increase the risk of infections;
  • people who have had their spleen removed;
  • adults with significant developmental disabilities that increase risk, like Down’s Syndrome;
  • adults on dialysis or with stage 5 chrome kidney disease;
  • and people with significant neuromuscular conditions that require respiratory support.

Public health is also now recommending that those who received two doses of an mRNA vaccine also receive the same type for their booster shot.

Fourth doses are not being offered at this time.

Eligible individuals will be able to book a third dose appointment online through the Saskatchewan Health Authority booking system or through a pharmacy beginning on Monday.
