REGINA - Ward 4 Councillor Lori Bresciani is to make what is being billed as a "major announcement" next Tuesday regarding the upcoming municipal election in Regina.

While details are few about what the announcement is, there is wide speculation that Bresciani is about to enter the mayor’s race in Regina and become the fifth challenger to Mayor Sandra Masters.

The news release that was sent out Thursday stated that Bresciani “is set to address the public regarding her involvement in the upcoming municipal election. The announcement, scheduled for September 17, 2024, has generated keen interest across Regina, sparking widespread speculation about the next steps in her political career.”

“While the specifics of Councillor Bresciani’s announcement remain undisclosed, it is widely anticipated it could influence the course of the upcoming election.”

Bresciani's address on Tuesday should put an end to the uncertainty about her intentions for the fall, after keeping quiet throughout the summer about whether or not she will seek re-election to council. Bresciani is finishing her second term as councillor in Ward 4 on the city’s southeast side, where she won by acclamation in 2020.

So far, five candidates have announced they are running for council in Ward 4: Balvir Bhathal, Glen Geiger, Deb Nyczai, Kofo Oni, and Charles Umeh.

Last Tuesday, Bill Pratt became the fifth and latest announced candidate to join the mayor’s race, joining a field that also includes candidates Brandon Abtosway, Kevin Kardash and Shawn Sparvier. Mayor Masters was the first declared candidate, having confirmed in March she would seek re-election to a second term. The municipal election is set for Nov. 13.
