A Thunderchild Crabapple was planted at the Battlefords and District Co-op in North Battleford on Earth Day. The co-founders of Tentree clothing line were there to help. Left to right are Co-op General Manager Mike Nord, Dave Luba of Tentree, Tammy Ramsay, manager/buyer for FF2, and Kalen Emsley of Tentree. The Co-op plans to make planting a tree for Earth Day an annual event. The Tentree co-founders of Regina-based Tentree International, a lifestyle clothing brand, have a simple business model: for every item sold, Tentree and its partners plant 10 trees. FF2, which carries Tentree clothing, has sold enough to account for the planting of 15,000 trees. Ramsay says FF2 brought the Tentree line in last fall and sold out in one week, adding the community has been supportive of Tentree from the beginning. Luba and Emsley, long time friends who enjoy the outdoors, had a dream to create a business that gave back to the environment. They launched on Jan. 1, 2012, and took their business plan to the television show Dragon’s Den where their pitch was a success. Ramsay was excited to have been able, after a number of phone calls, to have the environmentally conscious entrepreneurs on hand for Earth Day. Tentree has a global vision – planting trees worldwide where there will be a targeted, lasting impact. To date Tentree and its partners have planted more than a million trees, including 33,000 trees in Canada, plus 306,760 in Ethiopia and 813,350 in Madagascar. No pesticides are used on their reforestation sites and the manufacture of their clothing line takes place in safe and healthy factories committed to fair hours of work, absolutely no child labour, and fair compensation based on local laws.Photo by Jayne Foster
