The death of Chopin, an afternoon dreaming by the fire, gypsies singing of love. Pianist Jaya Hoy and mezzo-soprano Lisa Hornung offered up Romantic Music from Vienna as the first in their 201-2012 winter recital series, Music for the Soul. Presented at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford on Sunday, it is first in a series of several recitals planned for the winter season. Hoy and Hornung established the recital series last year to bring live classical music to the Battlefords through their own talent and guest performers. Hoy teaches piano in North Battleford, the community in which she grew up and to which she returned recently. She has studied and performed in Vienna and London and the United States, most recently performing in London with Julian Farrell, on of Britains greatest living clarinetists. She has collaborated with singers from the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera. Hornung is an international performer, teacher, clinician and choral coach who makes her home in North Battleford. In addition ot oratorio and orchestral work, Hornung enjoys an active recital career. This December she will be returning to the opera stage for the first time in many years to premier a work in Montreal, the Beast in the Jungle, by Paul Suchan, formerly of North Battleford. Hornung also runs the non-audition Community Youth Choir, is a vocal coach for the internationally renowned Cantilon choral program of Edmonton and is the director Summer School for the Solo Voice of North Battleford.
