Four hundred Kipling School students, their teachers and school support staff tied their laces to participate in their 30 minute walk for the Annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, Sept. 29.  Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 collectively funded for the walk with donations by community family and friends to achieve an impressive fund for cancer research.

“The teachers set out the challenge that if their classroom raised $500 or more they would have to dress up as whatever the students chose for one day,” explains Kipling School's Grade 1 teacher and Terry Fox Run Organizer, Kim Zepick. “It looks like all of the K-6 teachers will be dressing up!!!”

The Terry Fox Run has been supported by Canadians since Terry Fox first began his journey to educate people about cancer in 1980. Terry Fox ran a marathon a day over the course of 143 days, 5,373 km (an average of 42 km per day) in six provinces to spread awareness and fund for research to find a cure for cancer. On Sept. 1, 1980, Terry Fox stopped running for hope because his primary cancer (Osteogenic Sarcoma) had spread to his lungs, however, Canada continued to run in his honour. The Terry Fox Foundation has been impressionable internationally as much as it has been in Canada; researchers are working toward the cure for cancer in all areas of the world.

“I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to,” Terry Fox wrote to the Canadian Cancer Society October 15, 1979. “I want to try the impossible to show it can be done.”

The first Annual Terry Fox run was hosted by more than 760 sites across Canada and around the world on Sept. 13, 1981. His hope spread, people shared his dreams and we continue to run toward a cancer-free future, donating for the cause and funding for the clinical needs, physicians, laboratory needs for researchers and new knowledge.

The Kipling School, community and community neighbours have shown exceptional participation in the Terry Fox Run over the years, donating to the cause, supporting the walkers and continuing to promote hope for a cure. The students and staff at Kipling School celebrate the success of the 2017 Terry Fox Run with the community with special thanks to the Kipling Fire Department escort driver, Darren Szakacs, Ben Baker for the use of his bucket truck and Kim Zepick for her tireless hours of planning for this successful fundraiser.
