An Alameda-area farming operation was recognized for their longevity in agriculture and their commitment to the community during the annual Estevan Farmers’ Appreciation Evening on Thursday night.

Dunnigan Family Farm was presented with the prestigious Farm Family of the Year Award in front of a crowd of more than 300 people at the Days Inn Plaza.

The family’s roots in the southeast can be traced back to 1882, when William Dunnigan arrived as a pioneer. He endured significant adversity and hardship, including the death of both his brother and his first wife, but eventually settled in the Alameda area with his second wife Sarah in the late 19th century.

The farm has spanned four generations, and has grown and evolved over the years.

All four generations have also been active in the community.

The Farmer Appreciation Evening also featured speeches from local 4-H members, and a keynote address from Saskatchewan-based storm chaser Greg Johnson, who is known as the Tornado Hunter. Johnson discussed some of the storms he has encountered over the years, and shared some of his favourite photos.

Next week’s edition of the Estevan Mercury and South East Agri-News will have more information on the Farmers’ Appreciation Evening.
