Edward Arthur (Butch) Slabick

Edward Arthur (Butch) Slabick August 31, 1951 - January 27, 2012 Edward Arthur (Butch) Slabick was born in Estevan on August 31, 1951 and passed away suddenly on Friday January 27, 2012 at the age of 60 years. Butch, as most of us knew him by, was born to Ed and Marion Slabick, and was the oldest of 2 children. Butch will lovingly be remembered by his sister, Sandra (Vince) McGillicky of Estevan, Sask., his niece, Leigh-Ann (Darrel) Tessier of Estevan, Sask., and special caregivers, Helen and Roy Humphries and their family of Benson, Sask., as well as numerous cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ed (2000) and Marion (2008). Butch grew up in Estevan and attended the Kinsmen School for many years with his teacher being Florence Mantei. There was talk of starting up a Work-Kin Shop and his parents put his name in for this and started in 1973 being bused to Outram for a time, then a building in Estevan was purchased and he continued to work there for 39 years and was still working there upon his passing. Every Thursday night you'd see him at the Bowling Alley, throwing his ball down the lanes knocking down pins. He had many medals and trophies to show off for his bowling skills. He also was in the Special Olympics and has a lot of medals and trophies for the events that he was in, plus each June he'd attend Special Olympic camp at Kenosee for a fun weekend. He had a wonderful memory, he could remember people even years later and often he'd tell us who they were, plus he'd listen to a conversation and then later could repeat that conversation word for word, so you had to watch what was said around him. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved travelling with his family to places like, California, Nevada, South Dakota, Minnesota, B.C., and he really enjoyed getting a chance to watch his favourite ball team play, the LA Dodgers, his favourite hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, and his favourite football team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In August 2002, he joined his "Special Family", the Humphries in Benson, Sask. He quickly adapted to their home. He continued to work at the Estevan Diversified Services in Estevan, with Melodie, the Humphries daughter driving him in each day. Melodie and her family soon became a very important part of his life. While living with the Humphries, he enjoyed being outside with Roy and his friend Jerome. They would do countless jobs together, and he also enjoyed camping, fishing and going to the cabin. Butch was also proud of when they'd finish a job, because that meant he and Roy could go for coffee. Butch was very special to the Humphries and they learned many life lessons from him and he will greatly be missed in their home. They want to thank "ED" for teaching them that the most important things in life are very small and very simple and are freely given. Helen and Roy would like to thank Sandra and her family for letting them share in a very special part of their family. And Sandra and her family would like to thank Helen and Roy for the excellent care given to her brother and for Helen and Roy trying to do everything humanly possible to help save her brother from choking, but it just was his time to leave us, and he has left a hole in our hearts. Butch's life was celebrated in a service on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan with Mr. Doug Third officiating. Interment was at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens with his niece, Leigh-Ann Tessier as Urn Bearer. Those so wishing may make donations to Estevan Diversified Services, 1339-6th St., Estevan, Sask.
