Graduation honours academic excellence

A number of academic scholarships and awards were presented at the graduation ceremony on June 30 at the Assiniboia Composite High School. The 2016 Governor General鈥檚 academic bronze medal went to Bradyn Giraudier.

A number of academic scholarships and awards were presented at the graduation ceremony on June 30 at the Assiniboia Composite High School. The 2016 Governor General鈥檚 academic bronze medal went to Bradyn Giraudier. The 2016-2017 class pins for top marks in seven different subject categories were presented to Kohlton Booth, Kasey Coghill, Fallon Blackwell, Brenden Klyne, Cody Berggren, Connor MacMillan, Sara Kesslering, and Megan Zerie.聽

Mayor Bob Himbeault congratulated the students and presented the first scholarships. The Annie McMartin Scholarship went to Cassie Kuffner, the Matheson Pioneer Memorial Scholarship for the highest average went to Kohlton Booth, who also received the Commercial Douglas Floyd Memorial Scholarship.聽

Bob Scott presented the Rotary Charles Lindsay Memorial Scholarship for leadership ability and following the motto 鈥渟ervice above self鈥 to Shay Seebach. He also thanked Joanne Feeley for all of her work at school for Rotary. Scott told the graduates that Rotary donated a scholarship in the name of each student as part of the Ripple Effect Program to help in Guatamala.聽

Kasey Coghill received two scholarships presented by Al Kessler, including the Geltnew Scholarship and Dr. Delileh Istrati Scholarship. Geltnew was a merchant in Assiniboia in the 1950s who funded a scholarship for the arts and history. Kessler presented the Olive Lindsay scholarship for a student entering the medical field to Jada Yates-Gabrielsson. He presented the BPO Elks #110 Scholarship to a student who had to overcome a physical challenge. The award went to Sara Kesslering.聽

There were several scholarships supporting students going on to study agriculture. Connor MacMillan received the South Country Equipment scholarship and the JGL Legacy Scholarship, both presented by Al Kessler. MacMillan also was awarded the Yeo-Meagher Scholarship presented by Karen Meagher and the Bobcat Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 presented by Joanna Vandenberghe. Jim Kleckner presented the Southern Independent Riders Clint Nicholson scholarship of $1,000 to MacMillan. The riders have given back over $350,000 to the community.聽

The Order of the Eastern Star/Phyllis Heaps Memorial Scholarship for a student continuing education was presented by Cheri Cowan to Weston Mergel. Cst. Mark Dykstra of the RCMP presented Dalton Wenaus with the Scarlett and Gold award for good citizenship.

Jodie Juell presented the South Country Health Foundation scholarship of $1,000 to a graduate from the region who is continuing education in the health care field to Shaye Seebach. There were five applications. Seebach also was awarded the Kinsmen Scholarship presented by Nick Magnuson and the $200 Kinette scholarship presented by Marni Chadwick. She also received three additional awards: the Conexus Community Youth Scholarship for leadership presented by Claire Seal; the $2,000 Linda Froshaug Memorial Scholarship for English and writing presented by Corbin Froshaug; and the Hayley and Cayden Wourms Memorial Scholarship presented by Melanie and Les Wilcock. This is a $3,500 award of which $500 is allocated to 鈥渄o good.鈥 Larry Coghlin presented the St. John鈥檚 Masonic Lodge Scholarship to Shaye Seebach for English 20/30.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #17 Scholarship was presented by Marge Hawkins to a student who is the grandchild or child of an active Assiniboia branch Legion member to Cody Berggren and Eric Hawkins. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #17 Scholarship for math proficiency was presented by Marge Hawkins to Kohlton Booth.

Principal Brent Chadwick presented the Western Communities Foundation Achievement award to Catie Newton for community involvement and overcoming hardship. He also presented the CT Graham Centennial Scholarship for general proficiency to Eric Hawkins,聽

The Tyler Willer Memorial Scholarship was presented by Marni and Steve Willer to Weston Mergel for a student continuing education in the agricultural/mechanical field. Julianne Heagy presented two Southland Co-op Ltd. scholarships of $200 each to Eric Hawkins for community leadership and to Shaye Seebach for personal effort and continuing education in business, agriculture or health.

The Limerick Co-op Ltd. Scholarship was presented by Pierre Jalbert for a former student of Limerick School to Connor MacMillan and Bryden Silzer. The Wencel Doubrova Memorial Scholarship was presented by Al Kessler to Kohlton Booth for math. Kessler presented the Red Coat Trail Scholarship agriculture award to Weston Mergel.聽

The Special Achievement Award was presented by Lona Froshaug to Heidi Hepburn for overcoming difficulties. The Thronberg family presented the Austin Thronberg Memorial Scholarship for $500 to Owen Wilson.聽
