The cast and crew of John Paul II Collegiate’s production of Grease presented two sold out shows in May. Director Holly Briant, a teacher at JPII, along with fellow teacher Carrie Bragnalo as co-director, began working on the musical in September of last year. Briant says it was a long-term project and was work intensive, but the end result was amazing. The first step was to obtain the licensing to present the popular musical, then the search for costuming and props began. Second-hand stores were useful, says Briant, with 2nd Debut in North Battleford being helpful in keeping costs down. Some props and key pieces such as the Pink Ladies ‘and T-Birds’ jackets were borrowed from Weyburn’s Sacred Heart High School, which recently did their own production of Grease, says Briant. She says some of the costuming ideas were found online as well. Over February, March and April the cast rehearsed approximately five hours a week. During the last two weeks leading up to the performances, they rehearsed every lunch hour, every day after school and every weekend, averaging five hours a day. They were incredibly dedicated, says Briant, as were crew and stage managers, in particular Sydney Woloshyn, who was on board from day one. At the performances, lighting was done by Greg Charabin and sound by Rebecca Walker.Photo submitted
