The sport of motorcycle trials is the oldest established motorcycle sport, going back 100 years. Trials was also the first National championship motorcycle sport established in Canada, in 1949. Since that time the championship has been contested from British Columbia to New Brunswick, with one exception. Until 2016 Saskatchewan has never hosted this prestigious championship.
Trials is a skill-based sport, with no real speed involved, but an overall time limit. The sport has evolved into a spectacular display of competitor and machine negotiating seemingly impossible terrain.
The Bengough National Championships will consist of 12 scored sections, to be covered over three circuits, by all competitors. The loops will be approximately three kilometres long, while each section will be anywhere from 100 to 200 metres in length.
This not just a championship for the elite motorcycle riders. Canada’s absolute best will be competing, but the championship is inclusive to younger and older riders who aspire to a championship, or no longer want the risk of elite competition, yet love the sport. Each of the 12 sections will have five lines of varying difficulty.
Spectating is welcome and encouraged, at the site approximately 17 km southeast of Bengough. There is no other motorsport that allows you to get as close to the action as trials. They ask spectators to leave their dirt bikes and quads at home. The course is closed to competitor and volunteer vehicles only.
Bengough will play host to many activities for the weekend, such as balance contests, dinners, music, kids and champ trials and Bengough bicycle trials.
Practice and sign in will be held Friday, Aug. 19. The first round of nationals will be on Saturday, Aug. 20 and the second round will be on Sunday, Aug. 21.
