This was the scene Wednesday at City Hall as city employees took part in a demonstration on how old broken asphalt can be recycled and turned back into fresh hot mix asphalt in a matter of minutes. A Bagela portable asphalt recycler was used during the demonstration. Broken asphalt was deposited into the top of the machine. It was heated and melted inside and fresh new asphalt came out at the bottom, ready to be used on the roads. According to a company news release, the reuse of existing asphalt reduces hot asphalt costs up to 80 per cent and totally eliminates the cost of purchasing cold mix for temporary winter repair, saving money and reducing carbon footprint.Photos by John Cairns
