After a weekend of volleyball play by the top senior boys teams in the province, it was the Oxbow Black Knights which took home the title.
The Preeceville School and the senior boys volleyball team worked together to host the 10-team provincial 3A senior boys volleyball championships on November 27 and 28. The event took place in the gymnasiums in Preeceville and Sturgis. During the opening ceremonies, each of the teams was escorted into the Preeceville gym and introduced.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The teams participating were: Believe/Wakaw/Vonda Tropics, Carnduff Tigers, Gravelbourg Hawks, Island Lake Warriors, Kipling Magyars, Langham Vikings, Moose Jaw Cornerstone Falcons, Oxbow Black Knights, Rostern Junior College and the host team, the Preeceville Panthers.
Referees for the weekend were: Brent Beech of Yorkton, Sheldon Luciw and Jerry Lisitza, both of Preeceville, Susan Hensen of Kipling, Evan Rostoski of Norquay and Shaune Beatty of Yorkton.
Doug King, principal, gave the welcoming address followed by Taylor Belesky leading in the singing of O Canada.
Kevin Kitchen from the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association gave a welcome from the association. " I want to congratulate all the teams for qualifying for this competition. Making it this far in an athletic team competition is an accomplishment that cannot be understated. So be proud of yourselves, your schools, and your communities because you are representing them in great fashion this weekend. It is hard work and commitment that has gotten you this far and it is hard work and commitment that will take you through this final tournament of the year."
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Rhae Ann Holoien of the Good Spirit School Division brought greetings from the school division. Jim Ward, a Preeceville town councillor, brought greetings from the town. Josiah Sorgen recited the Athlete鈥檚 Code of Ethics followed by each team being presented with a 鈥渂asket of goodies.鈥 Cary Franklin gave the closing remarks.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The format for the championships started with the teams being divided into two pools. In the final round, it was the Oxbow Black Knights battling the Tropics for the championship. The Oxbow team was crowned the provincial champs. The Tropics were presented the silver medal and the Island Lake Warriors won the bronze medal.
