Train wrecks at Ebenezer, leaks liquid sulphur

CN reports no injuries and minimal environmental impact

Last updated 4:55 p.m. CST

Canadian National and area fire departments, including Yorkton, are currently on the scene of a train derailment in the village of Ebenezer, approximately 14 kilometres north of Yorkton near Hwy 9.

CN is saying 12 cars derailed, four carrying liquid sulphur, seven carrying cement and one was empty. Yorkton firefighters could be seen spraying foam into the ditch presumably to counteract a reported sulphur leak. CN says the leak was contained and will be cleaned up.

There were no injuries and CN is currently reporting no danger to residents of the community of approximately 175 people.

A resident who witnessed the derailment said the train was moving very slowly, but he knew something was wrong.

"I was driving up to the curve there; I had the window open and I  could hear that something didn't sound right with that train," he said. "Then the one car came off the track and the rest just piled into it."

The RCMP is reporting roads in the area will be closed for several hours while CN officials and police investigate.
