Vera Mabel Hansen (nee Tedford) April 1, 1926 - April 22, 2011 It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Vera Mabel Hansen of Parkway Lodge, Weyburn, Sask., who passed away on Good Friday, April 22, 2011, at the age of 85 years, after a short battle with cancer. Vera was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Isabell Tedford; and by her four sisters: Grace Turner, Laura Kernot, Blanche Fossum and Evelyn Snelling. Vera is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, Clarence Hansen; three sons: Clifford (Debbie), Garnet (Shelley), Bradley (Kelly); grandchildren: Kristi (Sheldon Elter) and Mark; Toni (Trevor Johnston) and great-grandchild Teague; Tyrel (Melissa Renz) and great-grandchildren: Eli and Ryan; grandchildren: Steven, Derek and Alex; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, along with many nieces and nephews. Vera was born on April Fool's Day (April 1), 1926 and grew up on a farm near Outram, Saskatchewan. Her early years of growing up on a farm in the midst of the Great Depression were difficult years and left an indelible impression on her, embodied in the "prairie spirit" of much of her generation. The family left the farm in 1942 and moved to Estevan. Vera worked in a law office in Estevan until her marriage to Clarence Hansen in 1951, when she moved to the Oungre district. There she and Clarence raised their three sons on the original John B. Hansen homestead. Mom always made sure that the family and guests were fed well at her table whether during normal work days or on special occasions. The grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed their time with Grandma and Grandpa, especially on their visits to the farm. They all grew to appreciate Grandma's sense of humour, and she loved to develop special individual relationships with each of her grandchildren. Mom and Dad bought a house in Weyburn in 1978, although they continued to move out to the farm in the spring for many years as Dad continued to farm, and moved back into Weyburn after harvest time. Mom (Grandma) will be remembered for her quick wit, humour, and often sassy approach. She could seldom resist "telling it the way she saw it." In later years, we joked that she must be the most popular April Fool of all, because of the huge number of phone calls she received from family and friends on her birthday. The family would like to acknowledge the employees of the Parkway Lodge for their support and friendship to Mom and Dad over the years; in particular Kim, Shirley, Cindy, Colleen, Darlene, and Linda. A service of remembrance for Vera was held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, Sask. with Rev. Cordelia Karpenko, officiating. Lunch followed immediately after the service. A private family interment will follow at a later date. For family and friends so wishing, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Vera may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 114 - 3rd Street NE, Weyburn, SK. S4H 0W2, Grace United Church, 210 - 3rd Street NE, Weyburn, SK. S4H 0W6 or a Charity of Choice. Arrangements were entrusted to RD Family Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Weyburn, Sask. (848-0333 ~ 1-888-848-0333) Expressions of sympathy to the family may be sent to our website at: "Our family serving your family"
