On Saturday, Sept. 30, a group of 19 enthusiastic people came together to take part in what has become a community tradition.

The Breast Cancer Walk & Banquet is held each year in Kipling. Joanne O'Sullivan has helped to organize the event since it began. She says that it came out of a desire to stand together with cancer survivors in the fight against this disease.

“There have been so many cases of people having to deal with cancer in this area. We wanted to come up with a way of raising money that we could donate directly to cancer research.â€

She notes that anybody is welcome to come and take part in the event, whether they have been impacted directly by cancer or not.

“The event is open to anybody that would like to take part whether they are survivors, family, friends, or somebody that would just like to help. It's really a way for the whole community to get involved.â€

Following the walk, approximately 50 people attended a banquet; featuring entertainment by Windthorst's 'Hints of Harmony'. Joanne pointed out that all of those associated with this event are thankful for the tremendous volunteer effort that they receive.

“The meal that the volunteers serve up for this banquet is always wonderful. And 'Hints of Harmony' were great! It was members of the Kipling Legion Ladies Auxiliary along with some other volunteers that came out and helped with the meal. It means a lot of work for them. It would actually be really nice to see some more people getting involved with either the Legion or the Ladies Auxiliary. But the people that we do have there do a terrific job.â€

Funds raised from the event will be donated to cancer research.
