DENARE BEACH — Denare Beach will play host to an art exhibit next weekend, aiming to teach youth and share Indigenous knowledge.
The exhibit, entitled “Bringing the Outdoors Inside”, is a collaboration between area Indigenous artists, Elders and the Univ. of New Brunswick. Organizers have been awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant to cover costs for the project.
The work itself will include a photographic exhibit showing the Wawataw Warriors, young Indigenous people from northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan who had a chance to learn traditional knowledge from area Elders Margaret Gardiner and Margaret Head-Steppan. The goal of the project is to give youth taking part a chance to gain both an understanding of personal wellness and about the importance of the land for Rocky Cree people and tradition.
Photos of the teachings bestowed from the Elders will be included in the exhibit, as taken by Denare Beach-based photographer Brandy Bloxom.
“This photo exhibit is a culmination of the gatherings which have taken place during the project, highlighting the experiences of the youth,” reads the announcement for the project.
The exhibit will take place at the DenarePlex June 25, starting at 1 p.m. with a special opening ceremony and honouring of Elders, then running until 4 p.m. Tea and bannock will be included.
