NORTH BATTLEFORD — The City of North Battleford has issued notice that the North Saskatchewan River is expected to reach peak levels in North Battleford by Saturday
The city says significant recent rainfall in Alberta is contributing to an increase in North Saskatchewan River flows this week.
A news release from Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency (WSA) notes the rise in water levels will reach North Battleford by Saturday, June 24.
“Water levels on the [North Saskatchewan] river are expected to rise about two meters (6.5 feet) from existing levels, and are expected to be slightly lower than the peak levels observed in June 2022.”
The current flow on the North Saskatchewan River is 280 m3/s with the increase expected to peak at around 1100-1200 m3/s.
The City of North Battleford’s Director of Protective Services recommends residents and visitors to the region maintain a safe distance from the river at this time.
“The flow can cause rapid changing water levels, which can catch people off guard,” said Chief Lindsay Holm.
“With a rise of more than six feet expected this coming weekend, it’s imperative that anyone nearing the river, even for recreational activities like fishing, be mindful that the current is very fast moving, it evolves quickly, and the water should be approached with extreme caution.”
Chief Holm adds that though flooding is not anticipated in North Battleford at this time, the city will continue to monitor water levels and conditions, and issue Voyent Alert! notifications if necessary to outline additional safety measures due to changing conditions.
