SASKATOON — Christmas is always Claus for celebration, even if it was only Nov. 19.
There was nothing frightful about the weather for Saskatoon’s annual Santa Claus parade. It was the 32nd year for this highly anticipated Christmas kickoff in the city of bridges. The website states this event is now a firm tradition in Saskatoon.
It’s a century-old tradition in Canada with the first Santa Claus parade said to have been held in 1905. It is the start of festivities surrounding Christmas and it was clear by the number of people who lined the parade route that it was a welcome event.
Official parade entries numbered 59 although many of the individual entries included multiple moving parts in their entry such as walk-alongs, inflatable and mascot characters.
A rousing round of applause came from parade watchers as the Saskatoon Hilltops marched along the parade route carrying their Canadian championship trophy, recently won. The Barbie float was another popular addition with its high energy, dancing characters on the float and dance music people clapped along to. People thoroughly enjoyed the performance of Saskatoon Light and Power as they climbed poles and prepared their Christmas scene on the float throughout its route.
Precision dance and cheer teams also earned applause for their efforts.
One family of five said this is the second year they have travelled in from Asquith for the festivities as it offers a great infusion of Christmas spirit and energy. Others along the parade route certainly touted the plus 10 temperatures for being a great enticment to attend in person.
Music and merriment continued for the one hour parade run.
Santa was sleighing it holding the last spot in the parade on the sled-ex express, and it was clear he is still loved deerly as families and children clapped and cheered as he waved to the crowds during his trip to Midtown Plaza, title sponsor of the parade. The blue sky, warm temperatures and enthusiastic crowd along the parade clearly suited him
