APAS calling for crop insurance deadline extension

Excessive moisture cited for seeding delays.

Various factors making it difficult for farmers to move forward with seeding this spring, APAS says.

REGINA – The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) is asking both the federal and provincial ministers of Agriculture to extend the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance deadline for 2022.

“This has truly been a unique year for trying to grow a crop,” APAS president Ian Boxall said. “There are some hard-hit areas in Saskatchewan that are really struggling to get going with their seeding due to too much moisture, when this time last year we were talking about it being far too dry.”

Unusual snowfalls and cool temperatures have also impacted operations in both the southeast and northeast regions of Saskatchewan.

“The world is waiting for a crop from Saskatchewan,” added Boxall. “This isn’t just a matter of farmers getting back a return on investment. This is a matter of world food security.”

Producers in Saskatchewan are hoping both the federal and provincial Ministries of Agriculture recognize the investment farmers are making into this year’s crop and consider meeting farmers halfway with a crop insurance deadline extension, APAS states in a release.
