THE BATTLEFORDS — The North Battleford Fire Department is warning residents of the Battlefords that as ice on the North Saskatchewan River and bodies of water in the community break up, driving, walking or snowmobiling on them pose serious risk.
North Battleford Fire Chief, Lindsay Holm, noted in a City of North Battleford statement on April 8 that the current ice conditions are unsafe and should be avoided.
“Our fire department is monitoring ice conditions in the area,” commented Chief Holm.
“It’s breaking up very quickly and we anticipate that over the next few weeks, there could be some flooding in low lying areas, depending on water flow from the west," he added, urging residents to stay clear.
"We expect the speed of the current to pick up over the next couple of weeks and we encourage people to not only avoid stepping onto the ice, but to remain vigilant near the riverbanks.”
The City of North Battleford and the North Battleford Fire Department are thanking the public for their cooperation in advance for avoiding nearby river systems in the interest of safety.
