Nine warming spaces open in North Battleford during looming cold snap

Various agencies and organizations have opened their doors to people seeking refuge from extreme cold.

NORTH BATTLEFORD — As extreme cold temperatures loom over Saskatchewan, the City of North Battleford has reached out to various partner agencies and service groups in the community to compile this list of facilities and services that are available for anyone who requires indoor places to seek shelter from extreme cold weather conditions.

The list includes: 

  • Allen Sapp Gallery at 1 Railway Ave. The downstairs will be open from 12 to 4 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday. Washroom facilities and water will be available. Their phone number is 306-445-1760
  • The Miwasin Kikanaw Shelter at 962 102nd St. Persons accessing the shelter will be permitted to seek shelter from the cold during the daytime. As available, water, hot chocolate, and juice will be available to those in need.

Those wishing to donate blankets, pillows, and mitts or gloves are encouraged to contact the shelter as there is a need for these specific items at this time. Their number is 306-446-1406

  • The North Battleford Fire Department will have a bus and utility vehicles downtown each night from 5 to p.m. to serve as a warmup location. Washroom facilities and coffee will be available for those in need. Fire Department personnel will be completing rounds each evening every one and a half hours to check on the well-being of vulnerable persons in the community. Their number is 306-445-1770
  • Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre at 1202 101st St. The health centre is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for people to access washroom facilities and warm indoor space. Their number is 306-937-6700
  • North Battleford Public Library at 1392 101st St. The Library's hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Services include a washroom facility, wi-fi, and water. Hot chocolate and coffee are available for purchase. Hats and mittens are available as supplies last and handed out on an as-requested basis.   • Battlefords Indian Métis Friendship Centre at 960 103rd St. Their hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Their phone number is 306-445-8216.

 

  • Living Faith Chapel at 1371 103rd St. A soup kitchen available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Their phone number is 306-445-3009

 

  • NationsWEST Field House. Warm space is available in the lobby during hours of operation. Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 

  • Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre. Warm space is available in the lobby during hours of operation. Open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Open 1 to 8 p.m. on weekends.
