PAYNTON — The deep freeze lifted and the air was filled with excitement as locals gathered for the Rhubarb Festival fundraiser in Paynton. The event featured a delicious chili cook-off, complete with chili bowls and chili dogs, bringing the community together for a day of fun, food and games.

The children had a blast playing in the hall, while adults enjoyed homemade baked goods that were raffled off throughout the day. A highlight of the auction was a massive strawberry cheesecake, donated by Bernie Leegarden, which was the highest bid item and was purchased by Richard Meinberg, along with Emma and Albert Duhaime. Inez Hoffman's famous cream puffs and two beautifully curated baskets, donated by Debbie Chisholm and Sonja Margerison, were also auctioned off. Cash donations were generously received, adding to the funds raised.

The event even sparked the rise of a couple of young budding auctioneers, impressing the crowd with their enthusiasm. Don Rushton of Paynton supplied a range of music and audio to set the mood, while Mark Rumold managed the bar. The day’s success wouldn't have been possible without the many helping hands from volunteers.

The kitchen team worked tirelessly to serve piping hot chili, ensuring everyone left with a satisfied stomach and a smile.

The funds raised from the event will support the upcoming Rhubarb Festival, set for June 21 in Paynton. The committee expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the guests, volunteers and donors who made the fundraiser a resounding success.

“It was exciting to see the Rhubarb Festival met with such enthusiasm,” the committee said in a statement.
