MELFORT - The Melfort Judo Club hosted a provincial judo tournament on Feb. 8.

This was their first competition of this calibre since 2007.

The event attracted 67 athletes from around the province, combining for a total of 118 entries. The divisions included novice beginner athletes and more elite judoka striving to be, or maintaining their positions, on the provincial team.

Judo Saskatchewan used the event as an opportunity to set up the venue a day early and bring provincial coach Josh Hagen into the Melfort Composite High School during their phys-ed classes. Most students were able to see and participate in judo for the first time.

The next Saskatchewan event will be the Kata clinic in Moose Jaw on Feb. 15.

The provincial judo team will next see competition on Feb. 28 to March 2 at the Pacific International Tournament in Vancouver.
