The rains we've been getting will be a God send for the crops even though there may be areas that got too much. The lake has come up considerably, so it will be easier to launch those big boats that seem to get bigger every year. I seldom see a small boat pass on the street.
Bonnie and Clyde are managing the concession again this summer and are generally open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Their menu looks interesting so I'm sure you can find something appealing.
"Love is in the Air" is being presented by Meota Music Productions July 30 and 31, in the Meota Comuniplex. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from Charles at 306-713-1901 or from Sue at 306-441-5441, for $25. The evening is sponsored by Conovus Energy with proceeds going to BUH Foundation. The concert will be focusing on love and hope songs, so will be both fun and entertaining..
The bridge players at the Pioneer Hall in the city on June 23 played a charity game for Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan and had six tables in play. The afternoon started out with a luncheon and a talk by Jim Walls on the topic of the day. The group was divided into two sections. Winners in the A group were Jean Lawes and Fraser Glen, followed by David Sharpe and Vern Iverson. Third were Linda Ard and Eric Callbeck, fourth were Margaret Dyck and Anna Waldbillig and tied for fifth and sixth were Donna Sherman and Catriona Winterholt with Mary Phelps and Gerry Craig. On top of section B were Mary Phelps and Gerry Craig. Second were Jette and Terrance DeSilva and third were Maureen Campbell and Albert Blais. This was a great afternoon and enjoyed and appreciated by everybody.
On June 23 morning, 17 seniors turned out to golf. Two teams tied for top spot. They were Lloyd Ward, Marcelle Duhaime and Svend Christiansen and the older team of Larry Dyck, Jack Day, Annette Duhaime and Janice Morton. The “older pros” prevailed in the count back, to claim the high honour. This group has it summarized like this: “Every day we can golf is a good day!”
On June 24 four tables of players turned out for canasta at the Do Drop In. Top score went to Lillian Sorenco and Dave Sayers. Second were Linda Ard and Arlene Walker. Third by a small margin were Dave Ottas and Vivianne Lesko over Jack Stewart and Albert Huys. An evening enjoyed by all.
A reminder that the celebration of life for the late June Sutton will be held Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m. in the Meota Communiplex.

The Meota Catholic Church is holding a gigantic garage sale July 9 starting at 9 a.m. An amazing assortment of items are awaiting new owners. This is one you must check out.
When surfing through the Meota history book I ran across this story. Charles and William Tait carried a boiler of hot coffee between them one-half mile from the John Tait farm, on a built-up winter sleigh road, to a dance in the schoolhouse, in town. Can't imagine boys doing that today. Where was the health inspector?
Spiritwood got two heavy rains this last week, like you wouldn’t believe. In the two dumps they got about 10 inches. Many basements have water in them and it really has alerted folks to the many low areas in the town and the need for sump pumps. It has also affected the rural roads as many have water across them. One is north of Bapaume, which is closed. It was across the highway west of Spiritwood, at one point. An area around Bapaume also got hail, which is never good, just hope gardens and crops recover.
End of Seeding Golf Tournament

The sun was shining June 11, when the Vawn Community Hall hosted their second annual Texas scramble golf tournament at the Meota Golf Course. It was a busy weekend full of weddings, proms and a funeral; but 11 teams from the region competed. The Kelly Page team, from North Battleford, came out on top shooting a six under par. Ladies’ longest drive was won by Chelsey Doom of North Battleford and the men’s longest drive winner was Gerald Duhaime of Kerrobert. A putting contest for a $100 gift certificate was won by Curtis McConnell of North Battleford.
After the nine holes were completed, all participants headed to the Vawn Community Hall for a steak supper prepared by Roxanne Sulatisky of the Vawn Hotel and Steakhouse. All salads were prepared by community members and the buns were made and donated by Katie Duhaime. At the hall all pin prizes and door prizes were handed out to the winners. More than 40 companies and individuals donated to the prize table. There was also a silent auction and 50/50 draw. Barb Blaquiere of Edam was the lucky winner of $215.
Artist, Bill Brownridge, originally from Vawn, donated an acrylic print entitled “Early Risers” that was live auctioned after the supper. Two local families were bidding against each other for the rights to own this beautiful piece of artwork. Zane and Dianne Lacousierre of Vawn ended up coming out on top. At 9:30 p.m. a dance was held. One Cent Melon was on hand to provide the musical entertainment to the crowd. They had everyone dancing in their chairs and on the dance floor till the wee morning hours.
It was a successful event that saw us raise over $3,500 for playground upgrades. The Vawn Community Hall would like to thank all participants, volunteers and sponsors who made this event a huge success. A big shout out to the staff of the Meota Golf Course for their exceptional service.
Now we are preparing for Vawn Celebrates Summer and our sixth annual mud volleyball tournament on July 23. Twelve teams will be fighting to bring home the Patty Tallis Cup. Games start at 9:30 a.m. There will be beer gardens and concession on site. A guaranteed $500 50/50 jackpot is sponsored by Vawn Hotel.
